Sarah Meyz was born in Jundiai, Brazil where she was a musical prodigy. In 2012, she was awarded a scholarship from Lollapalooza and Berklee College of Music for a Summer Program at Berklee's Valencia campus in Spain. In 2013, she was one of eight people in the entire world to earn a full-ride scholarship to attend Berklee in Boston for their degree program. In 2019, Sarah graduated with a double Bachelor's in Music Production & Engineering and Vocal Performance. In 2021, she was the first Brazilian to join Abbey Road Studios' engineering team and still works there today. She has done music production work on very notable films such as Society Of The Snow, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, as well as the song ‘I'm Just Ken’, sung by Ryan Gosling from the movie Barbie. Sarah released her first single "Never Have I Ever" in 2019, kicking off her solo artist career. She has performed and toured on some of the most well sought out stages, such as the Blue Note in New York, Bourbon Street and at Lollapalooza Brasil. She's inspired by artists like Arcade Fire, Muse, Coldplay, and Tears for Fears, but her dreamy alternative pop vibes have been compared to the likes of Lana Del Rey, Lorde and Grimes. The "Things That They Don't Know" EP is a concept project, featuring 3 tracks all recorded and self-produced in Sarah's home studio. Each song is titled with just one letter, an initial of someone that has hurt Sarah is some way. Each songs has it's own cover art and video that correlates with it's themes and story, fully immersing you into each separate narrative. Let's dive in.

F

We start off the EP with "F", a song about never feeling settled and comfortable. When you're someone who moves around a lot, it can be really exhausting. It's hard to make connections with people and find real friends that you can trust and keep in your life. Even though it can be lonely, you also gain a lot of life experience being on your own. You see the reality of things by watching how others live. You'll notice in the video and cover art, there's a chess board which holds a lot of symbolism for this song. We're all pawns in this game of life, just trying make it by. Some of people will do anything to be successful, even if it means lying or hurting others for their own personal gain. Sarah sings of being tired of dealing with people like that, letting all her thoughts and feelings out in this ear-catching indie-pop track. "F" has a nostalgic vibe, with dreamy layers of guitars and airy synths. The heavy reverb and Sarah's gentle vocals add to the retro tone, with a popping bass and a drum kit to give this song a very raw and real sound.

J

Next, we have "J", a very short and painfully tragic song about someone whom you once were close with, hurts you beyond repair. You're just so taken aback by how they could do something so horrible to destroy your respect for them, that the pain takes a second to kick in. There are some things that just can't be forgiven, and when someone betrays you to the point you feel like you could die from the heartbreak it caused, that's enough to justify never speaking to them again. Sarah expresses that this track was a very hard one to finish, because the emotions were so raw in the moment, but the track turned out perfect. Some of the best songs come from the most painful times. "J" features her unique, signature harmonica, a deep bass and a stunning acoustic guitar picking pattern. Sarah sings gorgeously with passionate emotion and soaring background vocals to add to the somber atmosphere.

S

Lastly, we have "S", a relatable dark electro-pop song about feeling like you're never doing enough. You're in a constant hurry to do more to satisfy the need to be "enough", but you never reach the end. It's exhausting, unrealistic, and numbing to your soul. You're unable to enjoy the moment, and all the little things in life because of all these constant worries. "S" uses dark pop and electronic elements in it's production to create this haunting but catchy soundscape. Sarah sings this addicting melody that catches your ear instantly. The whole entire vibe is perfectly crafted. "S" builds and builds until it reaches this cathartic climax where Sarah plays a harmonica solo for the high dynamic outro. The ending to this song is a whole experience within itself, but it's the perfect touch to bring the emotion to a brand new height.

I think Sarah Meyz "Things That They Don't Know" EP is a brilliant concept, and it left me wanting more. It's just such a creative and original idea that I could see there being a whole album like this. Not only that, but Sarah has such a unique style and musical universe that is entirely her own, while at the same time managing to make each song sound like a completely different world to explore. The way she's able to make you feel intense emotion not just through lyrics and vocals, but through the actual music and production itself is such an incredibly rare talent to have as well. Sarah Meyz has something really special here, and I highly suggest if you enjoyed this EP to check out her other songs as well, including her recently released single not on this EP titled "Keep Down".
