In Hutton’s aptly titled breakup anthem “5 Stages of Grief”, Hutton muses on what we go through after the breakup is all said and done. As a breakup is the end of something, it is only natural that we grieve what the relationship was and will not ever be– with soft strings and gentle percussion, listeners are treated to a gorgeously passionate track that details how we eventually get over and through the grief of that relationship’s end. All the denial, anger, bargaining, and depression will always end with acceptance. “5 Stages of Grief” takes us through that journey, but ultimately focuses on being okay with losing that once-special someone.
If soft heartbreak is your thing, you’re going to love “5 Stages of Grief”. There’s something really special about this single; Hutton manages to infuse so much emotion into each line she sings, and as a listener you can really feel the weight of the relationship in the song. Each verse details a little bit about about said relationship and the corresponding stage of grief that the narrator is going through. And in the bridge, all of it comes to a head as Hutton sings, “It started with denial / you let me take the blame” and so on with anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. I love how the instrumentals swell here, gathering energy in this last burst of emotion before plateauing out into serene acceptance. The track remains consistent in its instrumentals throughout the runtime with a lovely guitar and temperate percussion, but I always love a song that increases its intensity in tandem with its lyrics. “5 Stages of Grief” is a beautiful song that, while about downs we go through during a breakup, truly highlights how we are always able to move on from it.
Singer-songwriter Hutton has forever been an artist at heart. For her, creating music is a form of therapy, and a way to put emotions into words. Originally from Telluride, Colorado, at eighteen she moved to Los Angeles, and has spent the last two years working on developing her artist project. Working alongside producers Austen Healey, Runnner, Stephen Conley, and Derek Ted, Hutton has written a multitude of songs that are inspired by the sounds of the late 90s to early 2000s, as well as today’s pop artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Phoebe Bridgers, and Chappell Roan. 2024 saw Hutton’s debut single “COOL!”, as well as her second single “Afterparty”. “5 Stages of Grief” is Hutton’s third single, but is definitely not the last.
