Review: "Alibi" - Zosia

It’s safe to say that today’s culture is fairly obsessed with con artists– scammers, cheaters, and all-around robbers, and yet our curiosity for such depravity keeps our attention regardless. Zosia’s newest single “Alibi” plays on this idolization of con artists, and how we romanticize them and their lifestyles. Idolization of not-so-great people isn’t new, but this track will have its listeners thinking on exactly why we do such things, when the result usually leaves us with lighter wallets and/or broken hearts; in the end, we just get hurt, but we always come crawling back for more. “Alibi” is dripping in dark, electro pop, enticingly smooth with a richness to its soundscape that makes it feel decadently addictive to listen to.

If I had to describe “Alibi”, I would say it’s akin to a smoky room, hazy and mysterious. Its dark pop soundscape evokes out of its listeners a smoothness that the genre excels in, heightening our senses to every bit of instrumentation in the track. The low synth keeps that vibe going throughout the runtime, holding the tension in its hands; and then when you add Zosia’s gorgeous vocals into it all, you’ve got that slight lightness mixed with the darkness, and it all combines together to create a wonderful mixture of sounds that melds into the shadowy soundscape that is “Alibi”. Considering the lyrics, too, helps in reinforcing this mystifying atmosphere; Zosia sings of "the less you know, the more you’re mine”, reminding us that our ignorance only has us play more into the hands of liars and cheats, those who are out to exploit our lack of knowledge. In the end, as long as they have the "money"– whatever that might represent to you, whether it’s literal or metaphorical– they’ve got their “Alibi” and will get away scot-free. I love that Zosia leaves some room for interpretation for her listeners in the track, and it keeps the dark tone of the song malleable enough to fit whatever you might be imagining as the con artists in your life.

Los Angeles based singer-songwriter and producer Zosia captures the essence of dark pop in her powerful vocals and passionate production. Her music journey began at age nine when she wrote bubblegum pop with dreams of becoming the next Britney Spears; time matured her style, and her musical world is now built of her vulnerability and resilience, all tied together with cinematic sounds and self-reflection. Atwood Magazine has described her as having a “shattering sound [that] bursts with so much raw emotion that it cuts to your soul.” Debuting in 2017 with her single “Water”, Zosia has gone on to release a myriad of tracks since then, including a debut EP in 2021 entitled Symptoms of Nature, which includes an in-depth reflection on existence that was borne of a college course on death. “Alibi” was Zosia’s final release of 2024, so be sure to follow her on her socials to keep track of what’s next in store!
