Review: "Ashes" - Brook Lynn

"Ashes" is the debut single from pop newcomer, Brook Lynn, released on August 16, 2024. It's an emotional anthem about experiencing painful loss and trying to figure out what to do next. In this track, she turns to faith for guidance that it is possible for there to still be beauty and something to look forward to in the wake of her father's death. She takes musical inspiration from Christina Aguilera, NF, Aretha Franklin, and Amy Winehouse. If you have been faced with loss and grief, Lynn's song makes you feel seen, as she opens up about her own struggles. Make sure to add "Ashes" to your streaming library.

"Ashes" is a cinematic pop ballad that was written in a dark place brought on by losing her father. Lynn sings about praying to God, crying, and watching her dreams go up in smoke. She expresses these sentiments with powerhouse vocals, full of raw emotion. The track is driven with a piano production that complements the poignant, intimate lyricism. In the chorus, she almost pleads for a better outcome with the lyrics, "Let beauty come out of ashes / Let beauty come out of ashes / And when I pray to God, all I ask is / Can beauty come out of ashes." She brings us as listeners into her grappling with her father's death and the desperation for better days ahead from it.

Brook Lynn is a Dutch singer-songwriter who grew up in a small village with limited resources for pursuing a career in music. She fell in love with creating music and gained inspiration through watching videos online. Four years ago, she decided that music was more than a hobby and began working on her craft. "Ashes" is a powerful first single that cements her as an artist with impassion vocals and authentic lyricism. After this release, I am so excited to see what she will put out next.
