Review: "Back to Being Friends" - Cinzia & the Eclipse

Back to Being Friends by Cinzia & the Elephants

Heartbreak can send us into the deepest spirals that seem impossible to ravel back up, especially when you still love that person. It’s hard to sleep, to eat, to go about your normal day to day. You grieve the comfort and connection and push away the anger that hides under the surface. Cinzia & the Eclipse knows this all too well and spent a year navigating how she wanted to share that in her song “Back to Being Friends” off her EP, Springland. This track has a contemporary pop feel with the storytelling lyrics and groovy electric guitar and snaps. Cinzia shared that she wrote this song when she was heartbroken. She said she spent a year going back and forth with her producer, Luca Liberatore, on sharing the song because she was scared of being so vulnerable. After battling the choice in her head, she decided to release it for her listeners because they are a safe space for her music.

“Back to Being Friends,” brings the war of emotions you face when a relationship ends. Most of the time breakups ruin the possibility of staying friends with that person and it’s a hard reality to accept. Cinzia wants some form of connection to remind which leads to the hook line, “can we skip all of this and get back to being friends.” Her vocal performance captures all the pent up pain from the reminiscing on what was. This song finds the balance between accepting the loss and the possibilities of letting go. Moving on isn’t easy and at times that’s all you need to find the sun again. Taking inspiration from Carly Rae Jepson and Maisie Peters, this song is a gut wrenching hit you need to give a listen.

Cinzia & the Eclipse is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter. She has been developing her own unique sound as an artist by blending pop and folk. Music is her way to relate to listeners through personal experiences and relationships. Cinzia has learned to open up in her music with this track and the entirety of her EP, Springland. Since this EP release back in March of this year, she has had opportunities to perform live and shine in front of audiences. She had the chance to perform at Ottawa Bluesfest which is one of Canada’s largest festivals. Cinzia & the Eclipse is an artist to watch out for with her honest take on modern music and songwriting.
