Review: "cold september" - Christina Munsey

Christina Munsey cold september Cover Art

Christina Munsey’s latest single “cold september” blends together elements of misery and longing for someone you are no longer with. You still haven't gotten used to spending so many days spent without the person you loved most. Every mundane September day is spent wondering how comforting their presence would be. Small inconveniences like the cool air become frigid to you. You hang onto the words they can no longer whisper to you, lost in your own longing. When did you last have to heal with time or sleep without them by your side? It feels as though there is hope sometimes when you latch onto their words, but you know it’s always a fleeting feeling. One day you can fully move on, but for now, your days are spent longing for their warmth.

“Cold september” is an alt pop single that revolves its structure around an emotionally charged vocal performance and a nostalgic instrumental. Every lyric is sung with a low and almost spoken-word essence. Munsey’s vocals serve as the defining aspect of this single and shape its structure around it. This infectious method is said with wavering intonation which is reminiscent of the melancholy narrative and instrumentation. The primary instrument, an electric guitar with a delayed pedal effect, is reminiscent of the early 2000s, late 90s alternative rock style music. This guitar remains the star of the show throughout the entire single, being its most consistent element in addition to the vocals. Each element perfectly intertwines into an emotionally and vocally raw piece.
