Love is supposed to be a two-way street. “Could You Love Me?” by Elijah Woods is a song about the realization and frustration that comes along with putting your all into a relationship that is only one sided.
The lyrics conveyed in this song show that Elijah is starting to understand that his ex only needs him when it’s convenient, that he gives her space when she doesn’t need it, and he’ll do whatever he could to please her, when he’s not sure she’d do the same for him. Saying you love someone means nothing when you can’t show it. Of course, throwing the word love around is serious and should be taken as such, but when there’s nothing to prove your love is true and genuine then at that point, it’s just a word.
Through the chorus, Elijah sings that “Could you love me like you love yourself?/ You set me up just to make me feel stupid/ Is it all a joke?/ Am I nothing to you?/ Because I’m there sincerely/ Who are you?/ I can never tell”. This sequence of lyrics shows the back and forth thinking he’s going through and how much emotional sacrifice he is making to be with her even though she isn’t fulfilling the romantic connection they once had. He’s confused on who she really is, and he might not want to believe that she’s not who he once thought. She can go around saying she loves him, but her actions do not align with her words. Her distance, selfishness, and immaturity are dragging him along one heartstring at a time. Elijah is frustrated and knows she has the upper hand in their relationship, he’s a puppet and she controls the strings. All he wants is for her to see him and to meet him where he’s at. He wants to feel her love being reciprocated and that she can open her heart for him. He wants to close the gap between them, break down her walls, and rewrite their story.
“Could You Love Me?” by Elijah Woods is a song about an emotionally exhausting relationship filled with the desire to be seen, heard, and cared for. It’s about loving someone who only cares for themself and what benefits them. Produced by Woods himself, the track follows a deeply personal journey understanding the value real love holds in a relationship. This song is very expressive in all aspects, in the lyrics, instrumentation, and production. When I pressed play, I wasn’t expecting to hear upbeat synths as the foundation for the track. Listening to Elijah sing sounds like I’m witnessing a conversation he’s having with himself in the mirror. When he sings the lyrics "could you love me", it really does sound like he’s asking a question. The rest of the lyrics are deliberations to come up with a true answer. Although the track is more towards the pop side of things, you can really tell that he’s showing off his vulnerability.
