“day I die” explores the sorrowful feelings behind not knowing if you will ever recover from a difficult breakup. Every move you make seems to revolve around your past love. You go out of your way to make yourself continuously ready for their presence. Your plans are never truly yours as you solemnly await their possible return. Potential relationships are always fleeting when you search for your ex’s resemblance within them. You have already come to the terrifying realization that this is self-destructive and dependent behavior, but it can’t be helped. What you crave most is the comfort they once gave you. But over time, you’ve come to understand that if something does not change within, you will crave their presence for years. This bleak future of constant longing seems like an inescapable fate. It seems inevitable that this pain will fester for the rest of your life.
“day I die” is a contemporary pop anthem that utilizes somber yet minimal instrumentation to compliment the powerful vocals. The emotional narrative of this single is accentuated primarily through the powerful yet emotional vocals of Alexander Stewart. Every line detailing the narrator’s heartbreak is deeply felt through the vocalization. The instrumentation serves to elevate the vocals with its simple yet effective melodies. It both begins and ends with piano and gradually builds to atmospheric strings and percussion. The piano remains consistent throughout and serves as the foundation for each element of this single. These intertwine with the vocals to truly highlight the overall somber lyricism and narrative.
