Review: "Goodbyes" - Emma Hughes

Goodbyes Emma Hughes Cover Art

Riveting, emotive, and passionate, these are the words that best describe Emma Hughes' newest single "Goodbyes"! From the start, Hughes draws us in with her brilliant storytelling and holds us with her gripping vulnerability. Hughes confronts the feelings of denial, suppression, and anger that cloud our minds post-breakup while touching on the difficulty of being forced to sit with the cards reality has dealt us. In conveying that complex pain and detailing her hardships during such a delicate period of absence and longing, Hughes has created a sentimental piece that so many can relate to. "Goodbyes" is a somber, resonant piece that pairs a beautiful voice with a beautifully tragic experience. Despite its melancholy, it has easily worked its way up to a playlist favorite.

"Goodbyes" is a compelling track that has you hanging onto Hughes' every word. The hums and vocalizations that open the song set a somber mood for the rest of the piece, foreshadowing the heavy emotional back-and-forth Hughes grapples with throughout it. Serenading us with her velvety, alto tone, Hughes grants us a sense of stability amidst the chaos and turmoil she works through. Her impressive vocals command our attention and demonstrate her substantial range with faint tinges of country lined throughout her phrases. The piano, strings, and smooth bass offer depth to the track with other subtle instrumental intricacies that transform it into a lovely masterpiece. Overall, the production, lyrics, and execution of such a liberating, heartfelt song are not only reflective of Hughes as a rising artist but also of our most vulnerable selves.

Emma Hughes is a London-based musician with a colorful background and discography! Describing herself as a "girlie with a guitar and too many feelings," Hughes has touched fans with her authenticity, thoughtful songwriting, and sheer transparency. While "Goodbyes" is the most recent demonstration of Hughes' talent and musical sense, some of her other popular songs include "Make It Out Alive", "Before You", and "I'm Falling"! Drawing inspiration from the indie folk and country genres, Hughes has gracefully settled into her own sound and brand, never failing to hit us in our highs, lows, and late-night feels. Make sure to be on the lookout for Hughes' debut EP, which is scheduled to be released early this year! Stay tuned and follow the socials below for more info!
