Review: "Half Lover" - Cate Tomlinson

"Half Lover" is the newest single from Cate Tomlinson's upcoming second EP. The title "half lover" is repeated through the track as Tomlinson describes a lover that only loves halfway and often leaves her. If you've ever been in a painful situationship or felt that you liked someone a lot more than they liked you, the lyrics will resonate with you. The pop rock track feels like a release of anger, as she just lets her feelings out. In a way, it's like being read a rant from the Notes app or pages from a diary. That confessional lyricism and impassioned vocals makes this track the perfect addition to any streaming library.

In "Half Lover," Tomlinson is angered. She's honest. The track begins with the bold opening, "My half lover cut me open / I had too much to give." Similar to artists like FLETCHER and Olivia Rodrigo, Tomlinson has put out a scathing heartbreak anthem with elements of pop and rock. She describes her 'half lover' as cunning, manipulative, unable to commit, and coming back just to hurt her again. She talks about how loving him has brought her pain, as he is incapable of giving all of himself to her. "Half Lover" is the perfect song to blast and scream along to in your bedroom or on a drive.

Rising pop artist Cate Tomlinson is a 22 year old singer-songwriter from San Francisco and now based in Los Angeles. Her songwriting takes inspiration from pop, rock, and soul genres. She released her first song "notes app apology" in 2022 and first EP "Blueberry Season" in 2023. Now, she has over 30,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
