Review: "Happy On The Outside" - Theo Tams

Life is anything but easy and it’s so common to fall into deep pits of pain when things get hard. What tends to be even harder is the idea that we all have to present ourselves as positive-go-lucky people in just about every possible social setting. I’ve heard one too many people comment on how someones pain is an inconvenience to them and it creates this expectation in your head that you have to be 100% happy and smiling anytime you aren’t alone. Theo Tams released his song “Happy On The Outside” and it encapsulates the dread of a forced smile. He creatively made this song upbeat and fast paced to give it a joyful energy while keeping the lyrics dark, raw and real. Raining while the suns out is exactly how I would describe the feeling of this song. It’s a bittersweet reality that Theo and so many of us have experienced.

Theo said he wrote this song about how good he thinks we have all become at pretending. He opened up about his past with addiction and how even at the lowest points of it he would present himself as happy and fulfilled. After reflecting, he realized he had become a master of pretending and it felt comedic to him which in turn gave us “Happy On The Outside.” He keeps the lyrics incredibly straightforward which complemented the song and overall message. “No one will see me walk a wire or the dumpster fire that my life is.” Once you get good at the act, people stop questioning if it’s an act anymore. This song is a must listen for anyone who has ever put on the best show of their life while everything is falling apart behind the curtains. “Happy on the outside when inside I just really wanna die.”

Theo Tams is a Canadian singer/songwriter who mixes R&B into classic pop. He has built up a wide discography since his first album "Call The Doctor" in 2018. He is now about to release a new EP which will capture his cosmic personal shift. Over Theo’s life he has faced many challenges and setbacks but has always pushed through them and found his way out the other end. His vulnerability has given him the gift to connect with others through his music. His Spotify bio states he’s been called “a less problematic John Mayer” so if that’s what you’re looking for in new music than Theo Tams is the artist for you. Theo is unapologetically himself and pours intimacy into everything he creates. He has a lot in store with his upcoming EP so check the links down below to keep updated on the release.
