If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for slow indie songs. Artists like Bon Iver and Novo Amor are some of my favorites… and so is Jon Bryant! Bryant recently released his new single “High Season”, and it gives off all of the vibes that I hoped it would. This isn’t the first song of Bryant’s that I’ve reviewed… but I will say… it’s my new favorite. There’s a sense of desperation in the song that I feel Bryant nails in every piece he writes. Bryant sings of the loss of the American Dream as the housing market goes up… leaving many our age barely able to afford a place to live. Bryant himself said, “My generation can’t buy homes and every year seems more and more hopeless.”
Aside from the lyrics, I am always instantly drawn in my Bryant’s dreamy, soft vocals. It feels like a warm blanket is being tucked around me whenever he sings. With “High Season”, there is also a sense of tiredness to Bryant’s voice… which I think pairs perfect with the message of the song. He’s exhausted of having to stress and struggle to live, and pours that feeling out onto the page with this song. As for the instrumentals, like with most soft indie-songs, the focus relies heavily on less instruments, more vocals. “High Season” featured a beautiful acoustic guitar, and even the use of some light drums. I feel like I really got to delve more into the meaning of the lyrics and truly appreciate Bryant’s voice this way.
Jon Bryant is a favorite of mine, as you’ve likely guessed. Based in Vancouver, Canada, Bryant is a mastermind in his craft, and carefully translates his deepest inner thoughts into open-hearted lyrics that leave me feeling all sorts of emotions. He has been releasing music since 2009, and even has an album releasing soon titled "Therapy Notes", which “High Season” will be featured on! If you are also a fan of this kind of music, or you just want a good song to reflect with, I highly recommend giving this one a listen. “High Season” is streaming everywhere, now!
