Situationships are very difficult to process. The romance shifting from hot to cold for seemingly no reason, putting in effort without seeing it reciprocated, and being treated as an option rather than “the one” is all undeniably painful. Ana Kahan creates a heartfelt story that is a true representation of these conflicting, overwhelming emotions that come with situationships in her song “hotel”. Even with all the negatives of a situationship, there are moments where the positive moments are strong enough to convince you to hold on to the relationship. A sudden influx of gifts, compliments, loving words and touches - its what you have always wanted from that person, and now that they've began to give what your heart has been craving, its hard for you to pull away from them again. Unfortunately, the reality tends to be that its not hard for them to pull away from you, especially when their affection only comes in limited quantities before disappearing again. This constant back and forth and internal debates of "do they?" or "don't they?" can truly alter how you feel as a person and how you navigate love. The lyric "You pay for dinner and wine and it's a delicate line. Is it love or just a hotel?" conveys these feelings and inner conflicting emotions perfectly. How can someone treat you so nicely, dote on you, and be affectionate only for you to realize it was a one sided, empty love when they walk away as if it all meant nothing? This is a question that can run through your mind as you listen to Ana Kahan's "hotel" and get reminded that you are not alone in this experience.

Ana Kahan has a very distinct voice that has incredible range and variety. Her tone is very clear and full, making each lyric she enunciates easy to feel and understand. The background music and piano compliments Ana Kahan’s vocals throughout the song. There are also moments where there are echoes of Kahan’s voice in the background, which adds an almost ethereal vibe to the song that makes it feel as if you will float away with her vocals. The simplicity of the piano and the supporting music makes the power of Kahan’s vocals and powerful lyricism really shine through. It feels like a calm, Summer’s night drive with the windows down imbued into one amazing song. “hotel” ends similarly to how it began: with a question that Kahan seems to be trying desperately to understand throughout the length of the song. “hotel” is a very moving song. It is the type of song that you must listen to in silence while grasping the full meaning of every deep lyric. The silence will continue even once the song is over as you are left reflecting on your own experiences that Kahan conveys so beautifully through her song.
