Amy Pinkus explores the anxiety of a relationship ending in her latest single “Hypothetically Leaving”. Accompanied by a slow, melodic instrumental, “Hypothetically Leaving” takes age old sayings we have all heard before: “it’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all” and “if you love something let it go”, although Pinkus acknowledges that these phrases hold value, she can’t fathom the thought of ever having to let go of her lover. Overthinking and creating hypotheticals while being in a relationship is normal, something everyone has experienced before. Pinkus dives into these feelings in a way that showcases her vulnerability. She acknowledges that her thoughts are all hypotheticals, that she hasn’t woken up to her partner suddenly leaving her, but the feeling is so strong that it becomes hard to bear. “Hypothetically Leaving” lets the audience know that they aren’t alone if they’ve also experienced such overbearing thoughts when entering a relationship.
“Hypothetically Speaking” allows Pinkus’ vocals to remain at the forefront. While beginning with a simple melody, Pinkus’ lyrics take center stage in a way that demands the listener’s attention. The scene is thus set- Pinkus is seemingly speaking directly to her lover, telling them her deepest fears and the rest of us are privy. The monumental transition of the track arrives with the lyrics “I think that’s bullshit / Whoever said that”, when the instrumental becomes all encompassing while remaining simple in a way that sticks right beside you by the end of the track. “Hypothetically Speaking” speaks from the heart and pours out Pinkus’ truth, letting the listener into her world in a way that is both dejected but relatable.
