Review: "Jealous" - PLAYHOUSE x noelle

Jealous by PLAYHOUSE and noelle Cover Art

Taking listeners on a journey of empowerment, PLAYHOUSE and noelle’s new song “Jealous” looks at the negatives that can come from a breakup and decides against embracing them. The verses express the speaker’s mourning, because no matter what you do, heartbreak hurts. The words “every time that my phone rings, catch myself tryna catch my breath” communicate such a relatable post-breakup feeling. Listeners can resonate with the sensation of hanging onto the possibility that their new ex may reach out, and this demonstration of how it physically manifests feels all too true. The pre-chorus takes the truths of a breakup and aligns them with a healthy consolation: “I don’t wanna love you if you wouldn’t love back”. This powerful statement encourages listeners to place their focus on healing, with the understanding that unreciprocated love is not better than the end of a relationship. With a chorus that shows why a clean break is the way to go, the lyrics motivate listeners to escape jealousy and not maintain a connection merely for the sake of memories.

Bright electronic instrumentals, the snappiest percussion, and noelle’s sleek pop vocals bring a comforting energy to “Jealous”. The song opens on a peppy pattern of notes before fading out for noelle’s confident and narrative vocals and rhythmic percussion like snapping fingers takes listeners through the verse. Playing around with the melody, the vocals stretch the syllable of the word “I”, adding a fun texture to an emboldening personal message. The vocals get louder, caressing high notes as the percussion picks up and chords match the notes of the melody adding emphasis to the beginning of each line. The very same fun note pattern from the song’s opening has an interlude after the chorus before the second verse comes in with a bright and motivating feel. The exciting and resolutely  optimistic sound of “Jealous” will make you feel the lyrics’ meaning as it lifts you up.
