Heartbreak, longing, and that push-and-pull relationship with boundaries that aren’t quite defined, Leah Kate hits all these beats and more in her latest single “Just Because”. This one is all about missing your ex enough to do what your friends would probably urge you against: going back to them. And even if you both feel the same way, sometimes things just don't work out, and you end up stuck in a loop with them calling you, and you running to them. This track wants to acknowledge that feelings are often stronger than logic– and if you’ve got bad impulse control, then you’ll be falling back into bed with your ex “just because”. Joined by both electro and dance pop genres, “Just Because” is loaded with raw and honest lyricism that pairs with its dynamic, danceable soundscape, reaching universal relatability while still being a personal narrative about Leah’s own experiences that ultimately shaped the song.
Leah’s talent for creating breakup anthems shines underneath the spotlight in “Just Because”. The track is decorated in dance-inducing electro effects, sparkling echoes and entrancing synth– listeners are treated to a wide and varied soundscape, a range that is super compelling and a total treat for the ears. I love how the song swaps back-and-forth from its melodic chorus to the deeper, monotone verses that have Leah both singing and narrating about the song’s ex. And let’s not forget about the songwriting that is on display in “Just Because” because that is definitely my favourite part of the track– I just adore how flowy the chorus is, and combined with its soundscape, it makes everything just meld together so smoothly. The verses provide a juxtaposition to the chorus, being more directly descriptive about the song’s subject. This is especially evident in the song’s first line, which describes the narrator’s ex as a “classic American sociopathic douche”. It’s such a simple yet specific line that it had me picturing that exact man when I was listening to the song. “Just Because” is a brilliant blend of relatable lyricism and energetic soundscape that’ll have you both dancing to it and thinking on its writing.
