Review: "Just In Case" - Alix

Alix Just In Case Cover Art

“Just In Case” by Alix is a feel-good R&B pop track about longing for someone you took for granted and missing the moments you shared after the relationship ended. Intertwined in a mellow beat, Alix sings about only having what's left of the person's presence on 35 mm film. “35 millimeters on film / Is all I have of you / I hate that,” she writes. The mention of the camera film evokes nostalgia for happy moments captured and being the only reminder of what once was. Alix laments the relationship's end and looks back on where the problems could have stemmed from, believing “bad timing” could be a possible factor. “Was it never meant to be,” she sings, “Or was it just bad timing / Was there ever 'me and you?'” Despite its end, Alix still hopes for her partner to change their mind in hopes of rekindling the former flame they once had.

The song is a fusion of mellow beats and smooth vocals overlapping over heartbroken lyrics of longing. Chill and fluid, “Just In Case” is catchy with an addictive rhythm and caressing tone. The soft vocals are accompanied by lowkey guitar notes and follow a simple pattern throughout the song. Soulful and modern dreamy pop sounds flow around the warm vocals. The song serves as a personal letter to the former lover, vocally inviting them to return home to remorseful arms. Alix's voice tenderly moves over each lyric, as she emphasizes just how much she misses her partner and blames herself for its end. The atmospheric melody adds to the bittersweet feeling the song emits. “Just In Case” envelopes its audience in a melancholic manner, reminiscing on old memories and hoping for love to return.
