There’s a freeing beauty deeply etched into music. It can be interpreted through our own ideas, our own perceptions. Somehow, there is always a song that can provide us the comfort we need, the lyrics acting as our strong pillar, a tranquil susurration that facilitates our emotions, which have reached raging confusion. In a way, “Laura of the Woods” is a song that represents two concepts embedded in the song's lyrics. Taking the lyrics for what they appear as, we are set in a scene where our singer has had a misperception of another individual, blinded by a thick and nebulous fog, unable to see the underlying truth of who this person really is. Our singer is dazed, in a reverie, almost, but can’t shake the unfathomable reality of their false perceptions, incredulous that they had been lied to for such a long time. It’s a message that most people find rather familiar. Perhaps a companion or a friend. Someone whom we once thought we knew, we once thought we were so close to, only to come to a harrowing reality that what we were shown was fabricated, the reality of the matter sequestered in a dark corner, where the light of truth does not exist. Then, we have the true tale of these lyrics, inspired by the enigmatic story told by Radio Rental podcast, following a man who recalls an old interaction he had with a small girl as a child in the woods of his backyard, but through his dreams, he discovers that this little girl was simply an old woman disgusing herself as a young girl. I’d like to take a moment to appreciate how these talented artists were able to take a likely paranormal story told for eerie entertainment and manage to make a song out of it. They’ve crafted something into music with deep meaning, blending a mix of sounds to create a piece that people will listen to and find comfort in.
The song opens up with a sound that can be described as something mixed with pop and alternative, and I can’t help but notice the hint of lo-fi that sprinkles above the mix. It carries a relaxing ambiance, a pensive sound, almost, that allows listeners to truly sit in the song, in the lyrics, and carry the weight of their meaning to truly understand the message our artists are trying to portray with the use of their inspiration. The cover art of the song is also something I marvel at, depicting the scene of the story, where a young boy is reaching his hand out to an older woman who appears to be a ghostly figure. Both of them are present in a woodsy area on a late night, just like the story mentioned in the Radio Rental podcast. It gives us an image of the paranormal side of the story. In my eyes, the way the younger boy in the image reaches out to the woman, it’s almost like he is reaching out in yearning, and pure disbelief to discover she isn’t the young girl he once saw. But she is an old woman, a spirit, who was simply wandering, wearing a fake skin, and hiding her true self behind a smoke of lies.
A little place called Aspen is a band of five people, originating from Ontario, Canada. All of the members were friends who shared a vision, and that was to create an alternative-pop boy band. They wanted to create music that was inspired by pop, crafting sounds that will captivate any person who enjoys both alternative music and pop music, both of them blending to create a sound that a little place called Aspen is replicating in their latest formed band. Each of the band members contributes in adding their own touch to the music, with both the instruments and singing. Everyone in the band can infuse their own art and inspiration, making the music much more meaningful to them. Their debut single, titled “Back from the Dead,” was released on February 21, 2025, following their latest single “Laura of the Woods”. With much more music to look forward to as we continue through the year, I find myself excited to hear more of what they have in the works.
