In today’s day and age, the ‘talking stage’ is all too familiar. An easy way to get to know someone is to text; it can be casual but still a way to converse when you are not together. For many, they know that they have begun to actually like this person when they get excited seeing their name pop up. Kat Velasco’s latest single “Name on my Phone” details this exact feeling, and perfectly depicts the butterflies felt as you begin to fall for someone. As usual, Velasco’s lyrics are intricate and tell a story full of depth and emotion, giving listeners a complete look into what it is like to develop a crush. The soundscape also adds to this drama, by being upbeat and energetic, just as excited as Velasco herself.
She starts at the beginning, describing the rush and anticipation when she gets a notification and hopes it is him. Velasco opens the track with the line, “When it lights up / I won't lie if it ain't you / I get disappointed every time”. In the first verse, she goes on to describe their current dynamic- how it is new and enticing, slightly nerve wracking, but completely something she could get used to. The chorus is full of all of the things she is hoping for and what she likes the most about their relationship currently. She sings, “I could get used to your hand in my hand / Your lips on my lips / The way that you make this jaded heart skip a beat”. With electric guitars and a belting Velasco, it is hard not to dance to this beat and feel these feelings with her. We reach the title at the end of the chorus, when she sings, “I could get used to your name on my phone”.
Originally hailing from South Carolina, Kat Velasco is now a Nashville based singer-songwriter. Growing up involved in musical theater, she developed a love and appreciation for music and its storytelling at a very young age. Her first original song was released in 2021, being a single labeled “Leave Me Wild”. She headlined her first Nashville show this past summer at Exit/In, and is growing her stage presence by opening for various artists like Jon Pardi, Frank Ray, and Tierra Kennedy. She has almost 5,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and over 80,000 streams on her 2022 song with Greg Keys, “Waiting On Forever”.
