Review: "Nightmare" - Melody Mortal

"Nightmare" by Melody Mortal sings from the perspective of someone having to go through a breakup in the spotlight. I personally couldn't imagine what that would feel like, having to hold yourself together while the whole world has their eyes on you. It probably feels like, well, a nightmare. Melody Mortal uses clever lyrics and plays on words to tell a story about the painful breakup of a rockstar. Backstage, there's all this chaos and madness, but when the curtains open and the cameras are flashing, you have to put on an act and pretend like everything is okay. In a way, you need this moment to keep your sanity, because you know once that curtain closes again, the nightmare will begin again.

"Nightmare" is a dark, edgy, hyper-pop infused, punk rock inspired track. It features heavy drums and a wicked electric guitar. Melody Mortal sings in a conversational tone with hyper-pop vocal effects, creating this incredibly addicting and haunting hook mixed with both spoken words and melody. Taking inspiration from The Prodigy and Rob Zombie, this song has some nostalgic, electronic dance vibes as well as horror and sci-fi themes. The story honestly reminded me a bit of "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga, but if it was way more hardcore. The haunting nature of this song really matches it's name, as we've all been through a breakup where it feels like a literal nightmare.

Melody Mortal is an independent dark pop and rock singer/songwriter and music producer originally from New York but is now based in Los Angeles, California. She began releasing music in 2020, starting with her debut single "Bad Man Sam" which is on the brink of hitting one million streams on Spotify. She grew up on 80's Hair Band and Opera music, which you can hear sprinkled throughout her theatrical rock'n'roll influenced songs. It's Melody Mortal's mission to take a brand new approach to rock music, blending classic and punk styles with hyper-pop production to create what she likes to call anthemic revenge music. She teams up with her co-producer, Zad French, on all her projects, and there's only more to come; so make sure to follow Melody Mortal below to keep up with her journey!
