Being a female in society is a constant challenge. We face gender inequality, unrealistic beauty standards, impossible expectations, etc. You can be everything you know you want and need to be yet you’re still doing a terrible job in societies eyes. Deegie is an artists who has been degraded in comments for being a woman over 30 who makes rock music. People hate to see a woman succeed and that inspired her new song “Not in the Mood.” It’s a pop punk feminist anthem about a women’s experience in a mans world. They think they can silence us, but the time for that is long over.
Songs like “Not in the Mood” are written to challenge peoples old minded views and normalize the anger and frustration about social injustices and it's important to bring them in into the light. Deegie has become known for her emotional directness in her lyricism that has prompted the question “What makes you so angry?” Deegie answered it by saying “There’s something about a woman being raw, bold, and fierce that makes people uncomfortable.” She was directly on the mark with her reply and it’s so infuriating that after all these years, women still face gender shame. “Not in the Mood” encapsulates all the anger caused from men’s expectations of us and the hatred that builds up from it. “I’ve kept my mouth shut, nice and pretty, never bare my teeth or bite.” With the layers of raw electric guitar, energetic drums and passionate vocals, this is a song that will having you screaming at the top of your lungs. “You don’t care bout my point of view, I wonder what’s the point of you?”
Deegie is a pop-punk princess who writes anthemic melodies with gut-punching lyrics. If you’re a fan of Olivia Rodrigo or Avril Lavigne then she’s the artist you need to add to your playlist. She released her debut single “Smile, It’s Over :)” in 2022 and nine other’s since then. Her debut album EXES was released in 2024 and goes over the brutal honesty of the chaos in dating. “Not in the Mood” is the second song off her next EP titled Feminism 101. Deegie writes from personal experiences and emotions creating a diary like style for her music that we can listen and relate to.
