Review: "Not Ready Yet" - Sean Magwire

Sean Magwire Not Ready Yet Cover Art

Sean Magwire’s latest single “Not Ready Yet”, released November 22nd, is an all encompassing look at life and the human experience. Focusing on the negative aspects and yet finishing every verse with the sentiment that Magwire is not ready to leave it yet, he perfectly encapsulates the adult feeling of growing up. A gentle folk guitar, harmonica melody, and finger picking guides listeners through the song as Magwire sings about the fear of what comes after death, cards declining at the grocery store, and the lull of a boring nine to five job. Magwire’s tone of voice is similar to that of Train and Coldplay, and his perspective on life and the passage of time is certainly one that the three of them would agree on.

The track starts with the light guitar chords, and a back and forth on Magwire’s perspective. He lists some frustrating aspects of the world around him, and then some positives, and settles with the mentality of, “Ain’t life a bitch, I want more / But I'm winning just by waking up in bed”. Throughout the song, Magwire takes listeners on a journey reflecting life itself. His lyrics are specific and heartfelt, and truly correlate to the thoughts in his own head- that life is tiring but there is so much more to see in the world. In the chorus, he sings, “But I'm so tired / Oh I’m tired/ But I'm not giving up, no I'm not ready yet / I’m so tired / Oh I’m tired / Of this goddamn mess”.

Sean Magwire has spent his entire life surrounded by music. Hailing from Angola, Indiana, Magwire picked up a guitar at age 14, after his father introduced him to artists such as the Beatles and Simon & Garfukel. From 2012 to 2016, he was the main songwriter of The Lulabelles, and he collected accolades for work inside and outside of the band. Settling down in Massachusetts with his wife and two children, Magwire now focuses on sharing his love of music with others, and connecting to audiences around the world. With three albums and multiple singles available on streaming services, Magwire has amassed over 3,000 monthly Spotify listeners.
