Review: "Red Moon in Retrograde" - Red Moon

This song, “Red Moon in Retrograde” by Red Moon, is a hypnotic, alternative song all about the cycles we go through as people and how easy it is to blame those cycles on some cosmic force out of our control. It’s human nature to find something else to point the finger at, when maybe we should be pointing the finger at ourselves. And that’s okay. It’s okay to mess up, it’s okay to turn right back to something you said you’d leave behind. Maybe that’s a relationship you’re trying to get over, or a bad habit you’re trying to break, or whatever else may be weighing you down. As long as you recognize it and keep going, those cycles are just a part of life.

“Red Moon in Retrograde” is a dreamy, experimental song that uses a combination of moody soundscapes, electronic beats, and delicate vocals to create a track that perfectly balances the instrumental with the message Red Moon is trying to share. Starting out with a smooth and mesmerizing melody, you’re drawn into the song slowly, already hooked when the vocals of the first verse start. The chorus leans more into the percussion, adding to the tension built by the consistent and drawn out background. This back and forth of softer verse with heavy-hitting chorus lasts for most of the track, until it drops off in the last fort-five seconds, leaning more into the dreaminess of the beginning. Overall, this song has an enchanting rise and fall from beginning to end, and is an entire cinematic soundscape wrapped up in three and a half minutes.
