Review: "Salt" - Megan Claire

Megan Claire’s newest single “Salt” captures the feeling of falling into love and not knowing what comes next. For some, this feeling is exciting and positive, full of happy moments and hopefully energy. For Claire, she highlights the negative side of falling- that love is scary and unknown. She feels like she is surrendering her self control and ability to think clearly. The feeling of drowning into someone else is woven throughout this track, and she uses metaphors relating to water and oceanic themes, such as white flags, sea fog, and the tide rolling in inevitably against the shore. Claire’s voice is thick and heartfelt, and shares her deep and emotive lyrics with perfect dynamics and harmonies.

This track opens up with a simple guitar line, and slowly grows in sound as Claire dives deeper into her confusing emotions. Throughout the first verse, she explains the cadence of the relationship, and how it feels like she is stuck in frozen water. The pre-chorus into the chorus is as follows: “Am I drowning or am I just in love / Salt in the air I feel it filling my lungs / Running away before I’m someone you love”. With such emotional and descriptive language, listeners can practically see Claire struggling in this dynamic, not even knowing which way is up. Her voice is dripping with soul and depth, and has a soaring quality that mimics the way sea birds fly and dip over the ocean. The beat speeds up during the bridge and Claire goes back and forth with herself and the dynamics of her sound, replicating the mental turmoil she is experiencing.

Megan Claire is an independent artist, who worked with producer Danny Rivera to create “Salt”. The California-based artist has released four other singles on streaming services and is labeled as a “folk rock” artist. Her four other tracks, all released in 2024, have varying soundscapes and focuses. Her two most recent singles, “atlas” and “Ancient History” are ballad-esqu, with her earlier two “Somebody Else” and “I-5” carrying some serious alternative rock instrumentals. With a vocal tonality compared to Tracy Chapman and Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries, she has a unique tone and a very interesting overall vibe.
