Review: "Soda Pop" - MR

Soda Pop MR Alt Cover

MR's newest single, "Soda Pop," is a fun, nostalgia-filled summer anthem perfect for those upcoming final end-of-august pool parties. Put simply, the song is pure pop joy. The tempo is high, and the melodies are undeniable. MR takes inspiration from those late 90s-early naughts boy bands and adds their own modern twist. It's the perfect blend of new and old. "Soda Pop" is a track that fans across all pop spectrums can appreciate, blending disco, bubblegum, and funk to make for one of the most enjoyable records in recent memory. The love MR has for pop music is beyond evident, and their craft is meticulous. "Soda Pop," like so many other MR makes is pop music done right.

When discussing the song, MR said, "We hope that from the opening sound of the soda can, the listener feels the same fizzy, bubbly buzz that we felt while crafting it." And they more than succeeded. "Soda Pop" is plain fun. It's too syrupy and sweet to want to put down. The band exudes such playfulness on the track. From the cheeky, non-stop double-entendre lyrics to the interpolation of a literal soda bottle throughout the song, you can't help but smile while listening. Fans of artists like Sabrina Carpenter or Dua Lipa would particularly find much to love. "Soda Pop" is a pop anthem that brings back the spirit of a summer jam.

MR consists of members Maxwell Pollock and Robert Rosado. The two New Jersy-natives have been friends for over 15 years and began officially releasing music on streaming in 2022. "Soda Pop" is their fifth single, and the band has already seen massive success within that short time. Their debut, "Breakthrough," was an instant smash, garnering over 23,000 streams on Spotify. Now, the band amasses over 60,000 downloads on the streaming platform. And when looking at their catalog, it is easy to see why. The band blends disco grooves from the 70s and 80s with modern-day production techniques. In the few years they have released music, MR has crafted a pop sound that is both recognizable and universal, and it will be exciting to see what they will release next. You can listen to "Soda Pop," along with the rest of MR's discography, on all streaming platforms now.
