Review: "Southwest" - Kerry Kathleen

Sydney Gray

Kerry Kathleen's "Southwest" is the opening track to her latest EP, Bringing down your high, released on February 4, 2025. The eight-song project takes inspiration from artists like Elio, Sabrina Carpenter, and Taylor Swift. "Southwest" is a romantic track about feeling drawn to someone, thinking about them, and driving to be with them. She uses this imagery of driving as a reflection of her desire to be close to this person that she loves and see where they can go together. For those looking to add a new love song to their playlists, look no further than this one.

"Southwest" is an electropop anthem about driving to see the person that you love. She expresses this heartfelt sentiment with lines like "Something in my heart makes me wanna go there, driving through 10th street" and "Pulled like an ocean wave... makes me come alive / Sun rising for the first time." It's a feel-good track about love, desire, and longing. There being distance between you and the person you can love can be difficult, but with bright vocals, Kathleen sings about how she still feels the person around her, even when they are not there. It's a sweet testament to their relationship with earworming hooks that make it the perfect song to blast as you drive down the highway.

Kerry Kathleen is a rising pop artist who has wanted to be a singer since she was just two years old. She was always told that she sang too much as a child, but as she grew up and tried other paths, music was the thing that always called to her. Her first song, "Homegirl," was released to streaming platforms in 2019. Since then, she has grown as an artist and put out more singles.
