Review: "Stand By" - Sophia Warren

Stand By by Sophia Warren Cover Art

Sophia Warren’s new single “Stand By” gives listeners a look into a love that has fallen out of sync. Through expressions of want and fear, the song shows the pain that comes from letting go. The title is sprinkled through the chorus, haunting the song and the love it discusses with a lack of going all-in. Repeating the words “it’s killing me, yeah, being on standby”, the lyrics unlock the pain that comes from skirting around an all-consuming relationship. The song journeys through the speaker’s struggle to stay in line with her partner, revealing the hurt she feels, before ultimately she makes the decision to end the relationship before she gets hurt even further. In a harrowing and heart-wrenching dive into this complex relationship, listeners can get lost in emotion as they dissolve into the feelings of the song.

An exciting mix of modern indie dark pop vocals and eighties synth and dreamy note patterns makes up the catchy and unique tune of “Stand By”. With confessional and deep vocals like Angie McMahon, Sophia’s voice carries a haunting edge. Her voice glides smoothly along high notes, giving a slow and gloomy contrast to a glowing, upbeat note pattern. As the lyrics talk about want through the chorus, the vocals grow hazily high, taking listeners into a heavenly space. The instrumentals put listeners into a nostalgic, faced-pace place of excitement while the vocals take you to an entrancing level of feeling. With a genre and energy-blending tune, this song is sure to fascinate you.
