Review: "Still My Favourite" - Bea Stewart

Bea Stewart’s latest single “Still My Favourite” delves into the complex emotions behind finding ways to move past your past relationship. It’s a different time, but you still find yourself drawn to sinking deep into nostalgia. There are things you do when you’re missing your ex that make moving on difficult. Everything that could remind you of them does, and you’re left reminiscing. But for every step backwards, you take two steps forward. Sure, you see their name on a street sign, but you also took their pictures off your wall. The playlist you made for them will one day be renamed “I’ve stopped loving you”. They didn’t show half as much care for you as you did for them, so it’s easier to enjoy dancing alone than you thought it would. The small missteps you take in moving on are sometimes overshadowed by the strides you make to heal from them.

“Still My Favourite” is a folk pop single that utilizes indie pop elements to curate an atmospheric storytelling experience. The majority of this single’s instrumentals are traditional live instruments such as guitars and percussions. These elements allow for a lived-in, realistic story to be told. Stewart’s soothing vocals highlight these simple instruments and introduce a natural feeling story. With these traditional folk aspects prominently displayed, the deeply personal melancholy narrative is accentuated. Slight electronic elements are incorporated in the first chorus and remain throughout as this piece continues to evolve with each stanza. A constantly evolving musical experience is always welcome and a breath of fresh air.
