Review: "too close to love" - Alvin Weise

Kyler Griggs

Love is a feeling that is often sought after. Its ability to give you incredible highs and its ability to give you painful lows makes it a feeling that is sometimes feared as much as it is desired. This makes it complicated to navigate for many people.  In “too close to love" by Alvin Weise, the song touches on some of this and explores the complexities of love, as well as some of the feelings of anxiety or uncertainty that can surround it. One notable lyric that appears during the pre-chorus, “Too close to love. Too scared to admit we could've been something more", is undeniably relatable to many. Weise brilliantly vocalizes the feeling of hesitance and fear that many people have experienced with relationships that may be platonic, unlabeled, or something in between that slowly leans more into an area of romance. It feels like dipping your toe into water only to pull back when you realize its cold before giving it a chance to fully warm up. In the sense of the song, it is like drawing back from the possibility of a relationship developing since you cannot grapple with the feelings of warmth and yearning that is too close to love. Love goes beyond just being a word. It's such an all-consuming feeling that holds so much weight, the mere idea of it can often feel terrifying which is conveyed beautifully in “too close to love" by Alvin Weise.

The pop ballad song initially begins with a more mellow, chill vibe. After a gradual buildup with unique background music, the tempo picks up going into the chorus with a beat drop that adds an extra touch of energy and excitement. The buildup to the beat drop feels like the racing, conflicting thoughts you experience while grappling with the beginnings of the feeling of love but being hesitant about diving into that headfirst. Weise's colorful tone and soothing vocals shine throughout the entirety of the song. Near the end of the song, his soft and powerful backing vocals sound incredibly refreshing with each note making it feel as though you could float away in euphoric bliss. The vulnerability of the lyrics paired with the background music and Weise's bright, gentle tone creates an emotional, almost nostalgic listening experience. The sound of the song is reminiscent of hours spent under the moonlight reflecting about “what-if" scenarios and the possibility to be more with someone, all the while unable to tell if the butterflies in your stomach come from anxiety, the feelings of love, or both combined.
