Review: "Trust Your Gut" - Maisie May

Maisie May Trust Your Gut Cover Art

Meet self-reflection in an atmospheric sphere of folk pop and melodic vocality with “Trust Your Gut” from artist Maisie May. This track blends together the ear-catching effect of electronic music with the soft nature of folk music, creating a genre-bent masterpiece. “Trust Your Gut” starts off with a static-like sound, similar to an older television. This small detail sets the tone of the song – nostalgic, light, and cleverly layered. Like the implementation of this older television song in the introduction to the song, the song carries on with a balance between electronic music, folk, pop, alternative, etc. The song refuses to be defined by any genre, yet utilizes the best of mind-intriguing, complex, and beloved genres. In its entirety, “Trust Your Gut” is a song of a quality that has the power to put Maisie May into a different music playing field.

This track has a sound that brings scenes of comfort to mind. May’s both kind and powerful vocals give “Trust Your Gut” the sensation that I believe every song should have – a personal touch. While listening to the track, you can hear the sadness in her voice for the person she once was/has been. In addition, you can also hear the grace that she has for herself. The lyrics detail the confusion and difficulties of figuring out life, changing over time, and the struggle one has with themselves. May does a brilliant job of being honest, showing growth, and self-awareness as well as maturity through this in-depth and raw lyricism. “Trust Your Gut” discusses both the hardships and joys of life, and May carries her voice in a way that shows the balance between navigating happiness and sadness. The overall sound of the song reflects on this as well – the mix of both electronic instrumentals alongside soft guitar specifically show the range of reflection May has brought through this song.

Maisie May is an artist based out of Los Angeles, California. Outside of making music, May works as a server at her restaurant job. She spends the 1-hour commute to her job in her beloved 24-year-old Mercedes Benz, listening to demos she’s working on and daydreaming about romance. May’s life involves a blending of caffeine, love, obsession, artistic collaboration, brain-numbing work, blind faith, and a rude amount of gasoline. Since moving to Los Angeles from New York in 2023, May has released two EP’s – “2much2give” and “Flirty Masochist”. Most recently, May released the single “Trust Your Gut”. Currently, she resides in Los Angeles and is actively working on releasing new music.
