Review: "Vine Song" - Alas de Liona

Vine Song by Alas de Liona Cover Art

With immense poetics and an intoxicating expression of art, Alas de Liona’s new release “Vine Song” takes an introspective trip of love and vulnerability. From the very start, the lyrics entrance listeners with a sacred level of imagery. “A vine tendrils on your face” brings our perspective into the eyes of the speaker, beautifying this person through the caress of nature’s touch. Furthering a feeling of adoring connection, the lyrics say “my dreams compress me with your atmosphere”. From the cosmic language of attraction to delves into the actions of the speaker’s unconscious mind, these words place the relationship on a higher plane of existence. Beyond the beautification of one connection, the lyrics show the speaker’s deep need for togetherness, saying “I hold onto the ghost of anyone”. Taking these words into their minds, listeners are brought to think about what people mean to them. With a divine sensation of love and connection, this song will take you into another realm through its ethereal imagery and poetic lyrics.

Combining an introspective and resonant sound like AURORA, and a special sentiment of Alas de Liona’s own, “Vine Song” is the type of track you listen to while lying down with your eyes closed so you can appreciate every moment. Descending synth chords and a hollow percussion eases listeners into the otherworldly energy of the song. The instrumentals are very quiet as Alas’s hauntingly atmospheric vocals begin, reaching a high and soothing pitch that lulls your ears into a state of calm fascination. With an entrancing and holy sound, the vocals transfix you and take time with the lyrics, allowing listeners to bask in the meaning. A pattern of notes repeats as the vocals get lower before the chorus, conveying the vulnerability of the lyrics. The pattern continues as Alas’s voice climbs back to its soothing high, creating a cerebral sense of introspection. As you listen to this song, time slows and the building power seeps into your body, floating in the natural and historic imagery. Feelings of reaching out and rising higher emerge through “Vine Song”, making it the perfect track to listen to when you want to sit in contemplation.

Alas de Liona is an Edinburgh-based singer and songwriter from the California desert.
