Introducing “we good or what?” the brand new Pop / R&B collaboration between Obeeyay and Maya Malkin! At its core, this track is about a push and pull relationship which is keeping both of its participants in emotional turmoil. The lyrics spell this out pretty clearly with lines such as “Back and forth, it’s just too much” and one of my personal favorite lines “We’re out in the driveway, fighting like it’s child’s play.” It’s clear these two are stuck in a difficult (and relatable) place. In the end, there is a bit of an ultimatum being asked, are we done, or are we committed to each other wholeheartedly? Now that we discussed what “we good or what” is all about, let’s get into how it sounds.
“we good or what?” manages to sound nostalgic and fresh all at once. I knew this duet was special from the moment I heard their voices blend. Obeeyay and Maya build an effortless chemistry through their harmonies. Obeeyay interjects some fun ad-libs which bring a certain charm to the song as well. The track’s strong beat enters in gradually, starting simple and adding momentum and we get closer to the chorus. By the middle of “we good or what?” I definitely felt like I was listening to a feel-good summer anthem. With festival season upon us, it’s safe to say “we good or what?” is tailor-made for this time of year.
What happens when Utah-born Obeeyay and Toronto-based powerhouse Maya Malkin team up for a collaboration? Magic! This duet shows how valuable genre blending can be in creating fresh, new sounds. As a solo artist, Maya is honest, talented, and full of catchy melodies. Her debut single entitled “Hostage” is the perfect homage to who she is as a singer; empowering and introspective. Obeeyay is an impressive artist with credits alongside industry icons such as Brandy, and Queen Latifah; it’s clear he possesses star power. This duet definitely delivers as Obeeyay and Maya showcase their abilities in full force during “we good or what?” If you can’t seem to stop listening to this song, follow both artists on all of the social media linked below to keep up with any new drops!
