Although sometimes we might not want certain relationships to end, if that’s what's for the better they eventually do. It doesn’t mean we won’t reminisce on memories and hope for one more second with the person we lost. “We’re Over Now” by Cece Benz is about coping with your ex moving on with someone new and realizing your relationship has truly ended.
Watching someone you love fall in love with someone else is one of the most gut wrenching feelings, especially when it seems like their relationship is better than yours was. Although looks may be deceiving, watching your ex pine over someone else where it seems like they are a completely different person (when it comes to relationships) hurts. Watching them give someone else the treatment you wanted but never received stings. Cece thought her ex wasn’t capable of love, but then she questions if maybe he just wasn’t in love with her because he didn’t show it very well. This song is about wanting more. Cece saw right through his flaws and called him out on his act. She thinks that might be a reason why the relationship ended.
There’s also a lyric in the song that I really resonate with, “'Tis the Damn Season”, for many reasons. First of all, I’m a huge swiftie so this lyric being a subtle nod to Swift’s song (of the same name) is very exciting. “'Tis the Damn Season” by Taylor Swift is about going back to your hometown and seeing someone from your past that you used to be very connected with. Time stops moving when you are reconnecting with your past, but everyone else continues to move. When you leave your hometown and are finally snapped back into reality your world begins to start again, but now you have an open wound. Cece does a great job connecting Swift’s meaning to her own song, which is very fitting to the theme of “We’re Over Now.” Now, Cece is back in her hometown reminiscing on the past and is filled with memories and overwhelming feelings about people from a certain time in her life.
“We’re Over Now” is a beautifully layered acoustic indie track about time moving on but being stuck in the past. It’s also about realizing that a past relationship is truly over because your ex is currently moving on with someone else. Produced by Luke Giles, “We’re Over Now” is a great song to listen to when you’re in your feels. Cece really opens up through her lyrics. She expresses true vulnerability, especially by the way she sings. I love that the acoustic guitar is the foundation of the instrumentation. As the song progresses, more elements like shakers and upbeat tones are added to the track. Cece’s tone and voice are so unique and so easy to listen to, because she’s that good.
Cece Benz is a singer-songwriter from Atlanta. She began writing and performing original music at twelve years old so it’s safe to say she had her talents from a very young age. Right now, she is a student at Berklee College of Music where she continues to grow her abilities as a musician. She’s performed all over Atlanta, Nashville, and Boston playing at a variety of different venue types. Cece’s lyrics are personal yet relatable. She is definitely a rising star and one to look out for. Check out “We’re Over Now” and give it a listen!
