In a new single, Courtney Govan reclaims her story and insecurities, and vows to turn her past traumas into growth. She discusses how since she was twelve years old, she lived her life to please others and was always worried about what people would think of her. Now, she has had a change of heart, and states “your self-love needs to outweigh the negative shit, or you’ll never truly love who you are.” With the mentality in this single and a community of loved ones backing her up, she hopes to put her hard work to the test and practice self love over valuing the opinions of others. In this track, she sings about how people in the past have dragged her down and made her feel less than, but that she is finally accepting that their opinions are just that- opinions. They are not based on fact or anything other than people’s own insecurities, so why should she let them bring her down with them?
In her first verse, she voices some of the insecurities she has been made to feel by others. She states how hard it is to open up, how she feels that everyone will leave just like he did. If she voices her problems she will be called jaded, anxious, a narcissist, and the story will get twisted into her being a villain. However as she reaches the pre-chorus, she has a change of heart. Her voice becomes stronger, as do her lyrics, and she realizes that she is more than enough. She ends the chorus with the mantra, “If I let your opinion run my life / I’d hate myself until the day I die”. From then on, she flips the negative qualities stated about her onto her counterpart- jaded, anxious, a narcissist. The soundscape of this track is simple yet uplifting, a pulsating piano line that grows in power as Govan finds her voice and her confidence.
Courtney Govan is a San Diego based singer-songwriter. An independent artist, Govan is forming her own path of musician, content creator, photographer, and co-owner of a permanent jewelry pop-up near San Diego. She began posting videos of herself singing covers on Youtube in 2008, when she was just 11 years old. She now has over 50 million total views, a slew of professionally released singles, and an EP. Her sound is indie pop, with a focus on finding her voice and path in life. Her contemporary sound is highlighted in the pop soundscape of her music, but her voice is unique and soulful.
